Union members urged to back campaign to oppose savage job cuts

1 February 2010

Following last week's devastating announcement that the Student Loans Company (SLC) propose to axe 200 jobs from the Glasgow Office the Public & Commercial Services Union (PCS) have arranged a series of mass meetings tomorrow (2 February) in Glasgow.

Union members will be urged to back a campaign to oppose the savage cuts including if necessary by taking strike action.

Scott Wilson Chair of the PCS Union Branch said, “Last week's announcement was a body blow to the hard working staff in the Student Loans Company and to the city of Glasgow which can ill afford to lose well paid highly skilled jobs.

It is especially galling when you realise that 45 of these jobs are being transferred from Glasgow to England at no savings to the taxpayer.

Our members are shocked and angered at last week’s announcement. We will urge them to back our campaign which will seek the support of MPs. MSPs and city councillors and if necessary will include industrial action to halt any compulsory redundancies.”

Colin Young Secretary of the PCS union Branch said, “Members are already heartened by the support offered from trade unions, students and politicians - there has been an Early Day Motion tabled in Westminster as well as a motion to the Scottish Parliament in aid of our cause.”

Lynn Henderson, PCS Scottish Secretary said, “ PCS will leave no stone unturned in our campaign to reverse these huge cuts. We are calling on the support of MP’s, MSP’s and Councillors to support the union's campaign.

Glasgow and the West of Scotland can ill afford to lose one job in the current economic climate never mind 200 job losses representing almost 20% of the SLC workforce in the city.

Our members deserve better and they genuinely fear for the future of the whole SLC Glasgow operation and the 1200 jobs it supports.”
