On the back of this, we have established a national young members' committee which is made up of representatives from each of the regional networks and sets the overall direction for the network.
Like many unions in the UK PCS has an aging membership with the average member 45 years or older. Only 12.2% of working 20-25 year-olds are members of a trade union, which drops to 4.4% for those aged 16-19.
The network was started as a supportive environment to get young members involved in the union.
The south west young members committee is made up of the regional convenors and a number of local young members across government departments.
We meet on a semi regular basis and develop local issue based campaigns and share ideas and experiences and support each others work.
Pete McGuigan, young members convenor
The PCS south west young members ―rock against the cuts‖ gig that was organised with the Exeter Anti-Cuts Alliance (EACA) rounded off a great May Day celebration in Exeter on May 2nd.
The gig, which took place in renowned Exeter music venue Mama Stones, was a great success with over 60 people attending. Raising well over £200 that will help bolster EACA’s campaigning funds over the coming months.
The event was hosted by Pete McGuigan, PCS young member’s convenor for the South West and saw some great performances from local bands 97 Lover’s and Sound of the Sirens as well as Bristol based funk band Bass 6.
We received brilliant feedback from both gig-goers and the bands playing—everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable night.
Thank you to all who sold tickets, promoted the event, and helped out on the night.
