Hastings Against Cuts and Hastings Trades Couoncil is sponsoring a local demonstration against the cuts. They will be assembling at 12.30 at Hastings Pier and then marching along the seafront and into the town centre where there will be a rally with speakers.

Hastings will be particularly affected by the government cuts, having the highest proportion of public sector workers in the south east. So please come and show your support for the anti-cuts campaign which is already growing at great speed.

The PCS National Disability Forum have agreed that disabled members in Scotland and in other PCS regions, should be given the opportunity to meet at suitable venues within their areas, to discuss issues of shared interest with other disabled colleagues.

The PCS Scotland Disability Network has been dormant for several years and so it has been decided to re-launch the network at a special meeting.

Provisionally we are planning to hold a meeting to re-launch the network on Wednesday 22 June 2011 from 11:00 am to 3:30 pm.

Expressions of interest in the meeting from disabled members are invited by 20 May 2011.

Danny Dorling is the author of Injustice: Why Social Inequality Persists, which was published in 2010. Danny Dorling is a professor of geography at Sheffield University, and has spent the past 20 years studying the wealth gap. The meeting will also be the paperback launch of Injustice, which is even more relevant now in the current climate of savage cuts which threaten to further increase inequality.
Equality NW is an autonomous group linked to The Equality Trust. We campaign:- to increase understanding of the extent of income inequality and the harm caused by inequality for a fairness test to measure the impact of policies on inequality on wage ratio issues, to reduce the gap between top and bottom pay.

On February 24th, 1834, six farm labourers from Tolpuddle were arrested on a charge of taking part in an ‘illegal oath’ ceremony. The real offence was that they had dared to form a trade union to defend their livelihood. For this they were sentenced to seven years’ transportation to the penal colonies of Australia. The sentences provoked an immense outcry, leading to the first great mass trade union protest. The campaign won free pardons and the Martyrs’ returned to England. It was an historic episode in the struggle for TU rights in Britain and around the world which is why every year thousands of trade unionists gather at Tolpuddle.

There is no right to strike in British common law, but for most of the last century that did not matter. After the 1906 Trade Disputes Act the right to take industrial action was based on immunity from prosecution. You could not be sued for the company’s loss, so long as the strike met certain criteria. But the Conservatives during 1979-1987 introduced legislation which considerably tightened these criteria, requiring ballots before industrial action, banning strikes in support of other workers and other changes that created a legal minefield around trade unions, making even a one-day strike very difficult to take.

To treat it as a product of forces unique to Greece itself, or even to the entirety of Southern Europe (the PIGS as those peoples are labelled by many), is to misread the significance of the crisis toward capitalism and liberal democracy more generally. Through a series of round table discussions, three key sets of questions will be examined: what the crisis reveals about the fragility and character of the European project as it is presently constituted; the class character and stakes of current developments and struggles in Greece and beyond; and, most centrally, the possibility that the Greek case is simply an early example of a much deeper and wider crisis of the capitalist state.

followed by a discussion on how we can build strong resistance to nuclear

new build in the UK.

Background

The nuclear industry and British government are steaming ahead with their

plans for a fleet of dangerous, expensive and unnecessary new nuclear

reactors. The first application, for Hinkley Point in Somerset, is due to be

submitted as early as August of this year. But only a few week ago, the

French Nuclear Phase Out Network exposed secret documents showing that

defects in the design of Areva's EPR, the reactor chosen by EDF for Hinkley,

Sizewell in Suffolk and elsewhere, could lead to a Chernobyl-style nuclear

catastrophe. Scores of academics, politicians and campaigners are now

calling for a public inquiry on the justification process for new reactors.

As ever, it is vital that this year’s event attracts a large turnout, to give a clear demonstration that Scotland stands together against racism and fascism, and to celebrate equality and diversity in Scotland.

This year’s theme is “Scotland United against Racism” to reflect the STUC and the STUC Black Workers’ Committee’s positive engagement with a wide range of civic organisations to prevent the growth of the BNP and the Scottish Defence League in Scotland.

Protest as Parliament votes on housing benefits cuts

The government’s proposals on housing (cuts to housing benefit, rent increases and a threat to secure tenancies) will devastate working class communities and threaten to make hundreds of thousands homeless. Already local authorities in London are booking up Bed & Breakfasts in surrounding areas ready to ‘deport’ those who can no longer pay the rent.

There has been an outcry over these attacks, especially the cuts to housing benefit, with even Boris Johnson complaining of ‘Kosovo-style social cleansing’.

Tomorrow there will be a vote in Parliament over the housing benefit cuts.

Manchester film co-op

Manchester Film Co-operative is a not for profit film co-op that screens political films followed by discussions once a month in Manchester. The new series, which starts on October 27th, is on the theme of work, and most of the films are about union activism.

The film nights usually attract between 40 to 60 people interested in politics and activism and who are receptive to new ideas and discussion, so would offer a good opportunity to talk to people about unions.

The Film Co-Op has contacted us to ask that the attached leaflet be circulated but also to ask if any union would be interested in sending a speaker to lead an informal discussion following the screening of one of the films.

As part of this, in April 2007 we launched our “Make Your Vote Count” campaign. We asked candidates standing in the Scottish Parliamentary, Welsh Assembly and local council elections for their views on these issues. This was repeated in the English and Welsh elections, and again last year with the candidates in both the Glasgow East and Glenrothes Westminster parliamentary by-elections.

We are organising a Glasgow Town Committee for Tuesday 20 October at 5.30pm, to be held in our Glasgow office and would encourage members and activists who work or live in the Glasgow North East area to attend.

UCU Dispute - Manchester College

UCU members are in dispute with The Manchester College over contractual impositions that represent a significant worsening in conditions, including increased contact hours of up to 30%, reductions in holiday and sick pay entitlements. The Principalship have failed to adequately consult its staff and refuse to negotiate with UCU representatives, most recently derecognising UCU as the official trade union of teaching staff.

We have had a successful ballot for strike action (68%, turnout 41%) and will be striking on Wednesday 30th of June. We are calling on any interested parties to join us on our picket lines from 7.30am and to our rally and march to the town hall from the Shena Simon campus from 11am.

Plans are moving apace for our weekend of hope on 7-8 November, where we are encouraging as many activities as we can across the country. Whether it's targeting a key council ward for next year's local elections or holding a
town/city centre stall, it will not only spread the message of hope but

presence on Question Time.

On Friday 25th September 2009, Ian Baynham 62, and his friend were subjected to homophobic abuse in Trafalgar Square, London. When Ian challenged this unacceptable behaviour he was violently assaulted by three youths, two women and a man. He later died of his injuries on the 13th October. Ian is not alone, he is just one of thousands of people who have been victims of Hate-Crime. We need to show the world that this criminal behaviour is unacceptable.

The evening is supported by London Pride who will be providing stewards, t-shirts, experience and knowledge and we expect over 10,000 people to attend.

National climate march 2009

In the run up to climate change talks in Copenhagen there will be a march and rally in central London. The Rally will be a chance for demonstrators to put concrete demands to government for emergency action on climate.

PCS will have an official presence (look out for the PCS banner at Speakers Corner, Hyde park). PCS assistant general secretary Chris Baugh will be speaking at the rally which starts at 12 noon at Speakers Corner.

In February David Cameron announced the failure of multiculturism, supported by Angela Merkel in Germany and Sarkozy in France. Andres Breivik murdered 76 people that he blamed for promoting multiculturism in Norway. The racist EDL have threatened to bring their hatred to Tower Hamlets on 3 September. MOre locally the EDL have tried to organise in Waltham Forest but have been thwarted by local anti racists and anti facists. We believe that the multiculturism and diversity make communities stronger and better so we have called this meeting to defend multiculturism.

Salisbury March Against the Cuts

People from across Salisbury will march on Saturday, February 12, to defend the city’s jobs and public services against the government’s austerity cuts programme.

Called by Salisbury Against the Cuts, the event – Don’t Cut Salisbury Jobs: Defend Public services – will see two marches converge at Cathedral Close at around 11:30am for a rally in Queen Elizabeth Gardens at noon.

The main march will leave Millstream Approach coach park at 11am, to be joined by a feeder march of health-service workers which will leave Salisbury District Hospital (Entrance B) at 10:30am

The management at Manchester Metropolitan University are threatening 127 redundancies and a program of education cuts that will jeopardise the University’s place as a centre of community education in Manchester.

This week, management have banned UNISON from holding meetings with its members, thus trampling on their democratic rights.

In response UNISON has called a protest in defence of jobs, education and trade unionism at MMU. The protest will take place before the penultimate negotiating meeting next week. We are asking for other trade unions, community groups and those fighting the cuts on public services to join our protest. We want to show the Management at MMU that staff, students and community in Manchester will not accept cuts to our education, job losses and attacks on trade unions. UNISON is also voting next week on whether to ballot members for industrial action.

This is a follow-on course for Lay Tutors and Union Learning Representatives who want to improve their understanding of dyslexia and how it affects people in the workplace.

The course involves individual activities, group work and discussion as well as finding out information from your employer and outside sources. It is NOT designed to make you into a ‘dyslexia expert!’ but to introduce you to some of the key issues facing individuals, trade unions and your employing organisation. In particular, the course aims to help you to:

understand the most common traits and behaviour associated with dyslexia;

understand the barriers to learning at work faced by people with dyslexia;

consider how you might support colleagues in the workplace who are experiencing difficulties associated with dyslexia.

Unite are holding a lobby at the next NHS Hull board meeting to protest against the Trust’s refusal to ballot staff over transfer of services from the NHS to City Healthcare Partnerships, a social enterprise organisation. This goes against the Secretary of State’s ‘NHS is the preferred provider’ statement, and the Strategic Health Authority assurance and approvals process, which requires evidence of staff support for a transfer.

Thousands of people who voted for the Lib-Dems believe they have been betrayed. The result of the by-election in Barnsley, where the Lib Dems were forced into 6th place, show the anger that people feel.

A number of activities have taken place to take the CSCS campaign forward since the national strike action on 24 March and this meeting will give reps and activists the opportunity to listen to our guest speaker, Mark Serwotka General Secretary, give an update on NEC decisions taken at their recent meeting and advise on the current situation of the legal challenge to the cuts on the CSCS.

Alongside the overtime ban, PCS Scotland is organising high profile political campaigning, and the NEC have decided that all regional offices should take advantage of using a PCS battle bus as a focal point.

Hazards conference 2010

The Hazards Conference is a mixture of speakers, workshops and plenary sessions. It is a great opportunity for new and experienced reps from a range of unions to come together to compare experiences and discuss solutions to common problems.

Attendance at the Conference as part of the PCS delegation will be fully funded from PCS Headquarters. Accommodation is provided on a full board basis and travel and subsistence costs will be paid. The closing date for applications is 14 May 2010.

Dedication of Spanish Civil War plaque

The plaque honouring the Merseyside dead in the Spanish Civil War has kindly been given a new permanent  home by Paul Finnigan of Unite and will be rededicated at the new Unite Headquarters in Liverpool on Saturday 16th of October at 12.30am.

The new national "Anti Fasicsta" exhibition will also be on show followed by a lecture on the early days of the British Battalion in Spain by the leading expert in the field Dr Richard Baxell.

This will be followed by a light lunch kindly provided by Unite. Then the International Brigade Memorial Trust will hold its AGM ( for members of the Trust only).

In the evening from 7.30 a social event will be held at The Casa, Hope Street, with music and entertainment.

Pride in Plymouth - Kiss-In Event

This year, International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT) will be marked by Kiss-in events organised in several cities around the world in a global celebration of love! Features of these events, and messages from people around the world, will be edited into a global video for MAY 17th.

Join hands in a circle of unity for a two Minute Silence in memory of absent friends and those that have been murdered by bigots and repressive regimes.

Equality Mentoring Liverpool

This is a pilot course to support Branch Equality Officers support structures to establish necessary structures to aid them in their role;

The course will help Reps to:

• Understand the mentoring role
• Identify how it can strengthen your current role and your union organisation
• Develop mentoring skills and techniques
• Assist PCS recruitment and retention of new activists

UAF Demonstration Birmingham City Centre

The BNP are threatening to demonstrate on the morning of Monday 24 May in support of their leading member, Adam Walker, whose case will begin at the General Teaching Council in Victoria square that day. He is accused of posting racially and religiously intolerant material on the internet using school equipment during school time. The BNP is threatening to demonstrate on each of the three days of the hearing. On previous hearings they assembled in and around Victoria Square under the guise of defending 'freedom of speech' propounding their dream of an all white Britain. Their leader, Nick Griffin attended one of these. Despite getting a drubbing in the recent elections, the BNP see this as their way of getting back onto the front pages of the newspapers. Andy Boylan has booked the Blackpool Trades Council room to have an inaugural, and rather informal, meeting. He will send more details later but have booked the room from 12:30 on Friday 22nd October.

Colleagues from branches/unions not on the list but who are public sector or interface with the public sector are welcome. If you mention it to anyone who is interested then please have them drop me a line. If you could all let me know a delegate name(s) from your branch that would be useful or let me know if you or someone else from your branch wishes to be a contact point).

I am not proposing to say 1 delegate per branch or anything so restrictive at this point but if/when the committee grows, as I hope it will, we might have to look to restricting numbers to meetings.

Time/expenses for attendance are a matter for you and your branches/employers/unions.

Report writing course - Newcastle

Exeter Respect Festival 2010

Exeter Respect is the city's annual celebration of diversity. The Respect message is a simple one: racism & prejudice often spring fear, & fear is often based on ignorance, so let's overcome ignorance by getting to know one another & sharing not shunning our cultures.

This year Exeter Respect have organised a huge free two-day event which includes all the best elements of Exeter Respect in one go. After last year’s rain the Organisers have put more cover in the park. Get along nice and early to make the most of the celebration!

All activities run between 12&6pm but the park is open from 11am - arrive early to avoid queues.

Promoting Community & Solidarity event - a better alternative than the EDL

The English Defence League (EDL) are planning a march through Newcastle on Saturday 29 May 2010.

To oppose the EDL and to demonstrate a positive message about equality and diversity in our community, PCS is supporting the Northern TUC counter demonstration and cultural event taking place from 11am to 3pm on the same day at Grey's Monument, Newcastle.

Please encourage as many people as possible to attend and show their opposition to racism and discrimination. The event will be properly stewarded, but members should try to ensure that they do not get isolated from the group at the Monument.
