Say NO to racism in Swansea and Newport!

14 October 2009

PCS is backing opposition by anti-racists and local communities to two South Wales rallies organised by far-right troublemakers.

The so-called 'Welsh Defence League' (WDL), an offshoot of the 'English Defence League' (EDL), has called anti-Muslim demos in Swansea this Saturday (17th October) and in Newport the following Saturday (24th October). The EDL and WDL are racist, far-right organisations, which are made up largely of football hooligans and have links to the BNP. They have already caused violent disturbances in a number of English cities. Counter-demonstrations are being organised in both Swansea and Newport by anti-fascist organisations and local community groups. The PCS Wales Committee has agreed to promote the counter-demos within the union. The details are as follows:

  • Swansea: Saturday 17th October, assemble 1.00 pm, Castle Square; also, 4.00 pm  outside the YMCA on St Helen's Road (opposite the main city mosque).
  • Newport: Saturday 24th October, assemble 11.00 am, John Frost Square.

PCS members are encouraged to support these events, to show solidarity with our Welsh Muslim communities and tell the racists that they're not welcome. Coach transport for the Swansea demo is available from Newport (leaving The Riverfront Hotel, 11.00 am) and Cardiff (leaving Museum Steps, 11.30 am) at a cost of £5 per person) - telephone 07985 612015 or email wejdyandhelen2@hotmail.com to book a seat. Bus transport for the Newport demo is available from Cardiff (10.30 am from Museum Steps), again at a cost of £5 per person - please telephone 07940 108146 or email cardiffantiracistbus@googlemail.com to book a seat.

In addition, Unite Against Fascism is organising a demonstration at the BBC offices, Llantrisant Road, Cardiff CF5 2YQ at 5.30pm on Thursday, 22nd October, in protest at the BBC's decision to invite the BNP leader, Nick Griffin, onto 'Question Time'.
