Lobby your MP to oppose new attack on redundancy rights!

The new Cabinet Office Minister, Francis Maude, has announced plans to introduce legislation to amend the Civil Service Compensation Scheme (CSCS) in an attempt to undermine PCS' recent victory in the High Court. Rather than consult or negotiate with the unions about the implications of that judgement, the government plans to introduce an arbitrary cap on compensation payments, and also to introduce legislation to scrap the legal requirement for the unions to agree any changes to the Scheme.

The government's aim is to cap redundancy payments at a maximum of 12 months’ salary for a compulsory redundancy and 15 months’ salary for a voluntary redundancy. For most civil servants, this would represent a two-thirds reduction, compared to what they could expect to receive under the existing arrangements. It is therefore even worse than the changes that the previous government attempted - unlawfully - to impose. In view of the savage spending cuts that have been announced, these plans represent a serious threat to thousands of hard-working civil and public servants. We now need to step up our efforts to defend members' redundancy rights.

PCS is asking all members to lobby their MPs to support our campaign against the government’s plans. You can do this by using our new 'e-action' facility. This asks MPs to participate in any parliamentary debates, in support of the union’s position; to request an urgent meeting with Francis Maude, and ask him to negotiate meaningfully with PCS; and to sign Early Day Motion 301, which urges the government to enter into new negotiations to reach a settlement.
