Wales committee agrees pay campaign plan

2 October 2008

At the same time as most members are being balloted on industrial action, the PCS Wales Committee met in Llandrindod Wells to plan a programme of campaign activity to support the national pay dispute.

The Committee was told that PCS Wales had successfully persuaded other public sector unions to joint union campaigning in Wales.

The WTUC has been tasked with organising a pay lobby at the Assembly, marches in the New Year, an MP/AM postcard campaign and meetings with senior Welsh politicians.

Wales committee delegates gathered for a 2 day meeting in Llandridod Wells on 23 and 24 September

PCS Wales Committee Chair, Katrine Williams, said “The imposition of below-inflation increases in the public sector has a bigger impact in Wales, given the relatively high numbers of public sector workers.

"We intend to send a message to our elected politicians that our members, many of them low paid, are not prepared to sit back and suffer cuts in their living standards.”

The committee received a pay update from NEC liaison officer, Dave Richards, who highlighted the importance of a good turn-out in the ballot, as well as a strong ‘Yes’ vote.

PCS area campaign coordinators will be asked to organise meetings and plan for local campaign activity.

Committee signs off PCS Wales annual plan

The PCS Wales annual plan 2008/9 was signed off by the Committee. The plan has 6 strands on education, workplace learning, equality, health and safety, organising, campaigning/influencing government and communications. There are more than 70 action points in total.

PCS Wales Officer, Jeff Evans said, “The plan is now a well established part of our way of working in Wales. The ownership of the plan is vested in the Wales Committee and its sub-committees; however, much of the delivery will need to take place at branch and local office level.”

He added, “I would encourage all branches in Wales to review the plan at BEC level.  The focus of the plan is to create a supportive environment for PCS reps in Wales with the aim of greater membership participation in our work programmes.”
