PCS Wales demands assurances on Merthyr-based government jobs following Hoover announcement

19 November 2008

The PCS, is seeking assurances from the Treasury that future of the Merthyr Tydfil based HMRC (Customs and Revenue) office is secure. HMRC have embarked on a UK wide office closure programme and a decision on the Merthyr office, which employs 70 staff, is imminent.

PCS Senior National Officer for Wales, Jeff Evans, said “If the UK Government is serious about supporting the Merthyr local economy, this is an issue over which they have direct influence. We think it is ludicrous that a Government office, based one of Wales’s most economically deprived areas, should be under threat of closure. We shouldn’t be talking about its potential closure – we should be discussing its expansion.”

He added, “The local service provided by the Merthyr HMRC office to businesses and members of the public is critical to economic regeneration. It is vitally important that every effort is made to save the jobs of the Hoover workforce. At the same time, the Government needs to look at the wider Merthyr economy and do all it can to maintain employment in the area, including its own workforce. During these trouble economic times, Gordon Brown has often claimed to be on the side of working families. The families of Merthyr workers will be carefully watching to see if he is true to his word.”
