Important PCS Wales education programme update

17 August 2010

You will be aware that PCS is launching a national campaign on protecting services, jobs and pay and conditions. This is the top priority for the union. As such our trade union education programme needs to reflect this. As such, it has been decided by Organising and Learning Services to change the programme that has been advertised.

The programme from September onwards is therefore being cleared to make way for the briefings and modules that are being developed to support the campaign. This means:

  • Cancelling all courses except for: Introduction to PCS; New ULRs course; Personal Cases. These courses will ONLY run where there is demand. If there are other courses where there is a specific and urgent need in your branch or group please contact Jayne Smith - jaynes@pcs.org.uk who will seek authority from PCS Organising and Learning to hold them.
  • Where these courses run ensure that the campaign is covered on the course and invite a speaker on the campaign.
  • Planning a programme of workshops and briefings from the new materials to support the campaign. These should be available from mid September. The initial menu of workshops/briefings consists of:
    • Mapping
    • Recruitment techniques
    • Key messages about public services
    • PCS's alternative
    • Privatisation
    • TUPE
    • Redundancy rights
    • Equality Impact Assessments
    • Using the media and effective communications including written communication skills
    • Public speaking
    • Lobbying
    • Tackling the far right
    • Using the make your vote count campaign
    • Working with town/local committees
    • Working with other unions and trades councils
    • Working with other organisations (e.g. community organisations)

Most of these will be for reps while some will be briefings for reps to deliver to members. It is expected that the workshops/briefings will be delivered by key lay activists and lay tutors.

There will now be consultation involving the officers of the regional committee, with a view to drawing up a list the activists best placed to deliver these workshops/briefings. The planned programme will then be taken to the Regional /Area Campaign committees to identify what is relevant to their location.

Representatives that have already applied for the cancelled courses are being notified of the decision.
