Welsh Euro candidates present their views to PCS members

27 May 2009

On 26th May, Cardiff City Hall saw Welsh European election candidates take part in a PCS 'question time' meeting, focusing on their views on public services and the far right.

PCS members from the DWP, HMRC, MoJ, Atradius, National Museum Wales and the Wales Audit Office heard stump speeches from candidates representing the Conservatives (David Chipp), Labour (Derek Vaughan), the Greens (Jake Griffiths), the Liberal Democrats (Alan Butt Philip), Plaid Cymru (Jill Evans) and the ‘No 2 EU, Yes to Democracy’ slate (Rob Griffiths). In all but one case, the speaker taking part was the no. 1 candidate on their party’s list for Wales.

Following opening speeches, the panel answered questions from the audience. The subjects covered ranged from the UK government's insistence on cutting jobs and shutting offices in HM Revenue & Customs – despite £25 billion of taxes going uncollected annually – to the growing threat represented by the racist BNP. The speakers were broadly sympathetic to PCS’ concerns on these issues, pledging to do what they could to defend jobs and services in Wales, as well as cracking down on tax evasion and avoidance, and to present a united opposition to the far right.
