Peter Harris takes over as PCS Wales Secretary

18 January 2010

Peter Harris has been appointed by the General Secretary to the post of PCS Wales Secretary, as part of the union's strategic management review. The review also sees PCS Wales become part of a new department under Jeff Evans, who is now Senior National Officer for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Peter says:

'I am delighted to be given the opportunity to lead PCS Wales in building our contribution to this new structure and ensuring the interests of our members in Wales are addressed.

'I am committed to continuing to deliver the priorities of our members and defending terms and conditions. I will work with PCS colleagues to deliver the best structures for the union in Wales, within the new department of devolved nations and within the national union as a whole. I am proud of the work we have undertaken in recent years in Wales and look forward to developing our Campaigning, Equality, Learning and other work in the future.

'It is no coincidence that these internal PCS changes are taking place at a time when members are facing the massive challenge of the pre-general election consensus of the main political parties for unprecedented public sector cuts, pay freezes and privatisation. Our union must operate at full strength in order to build a united campaign with other public sector unions and to confidently stand up for and organise members against the unprecedented threat to come for public services, jobs, pay and conditions. We have seen the recent attack on members' entitlements under the civil service compensation scheme. This will make job cuts cheaper and cut compensation payments in the event of redundancy. Our main priority therefore has to be to build support for the proposed campaign of national industrial action agreed by the NEC last week.

'All of these organisational changes are intended to build on the existing excellent record of PCS Wales staff, officials and lay reps in delivering the national priorities for the union.

'Further changes in roles and responsibilities in the PCS Wales office will be announced soon.'
