General Secretary calls for investment, not cuts, in Welsh public services

29 April 2009

PCS General Secretary, Mark Serwotka, has slammed government cutbacks to public services in Wales in response to the recession, arguing that those services are now needed more than ever.

Interviewed on 28th April on the BBC Radio Wales programme, 'Wales at Work', he laid the economic crisis at the door of  the unregulated free-market and said that those responsible 'now expect the people who had nothing to do with making the crisis to pay the price'. He added, 'when people talk about "efficiency savings", they mean job cuts, they mean slashing public spending: £416 million from the budget in Wales, £1½ billion from the budget of the Scottish Parliament. We believe that, at a time of such a deep recession, cutting public spending is economically illiterate, that actually now is the time to NOT cut jobs, to NOT cut services, but to invest in them and that’s even more important in Wales, where 29% of all those in work are public servants .'

The programme can be heard via the i-player on the BBC website.
