PCS members in HMRC are striking against the cuts on Tuesday 31 January. PCS is in dispute to defend jobs and terms and conditions which are threatened by plans to outsource civil service work to the private sector.
The dispute centres on Personal Tax Operations and HMRC contact centres with over 8,000 jobs at risk. In an unprecedented move contractor staff could now be working in HMRC contact centres.
The dispute reflects the government’s attempt to drive down wage costs cutting everyone’s standard of living. Contractors trying to get a foothold in government contact centres are currently seeking to recruit offering £3000 less than entry level pay in the civil service. Public services will be put at risk as Ministers try to turn their war of words against public service workers into action. If they succeed key public services will be delivered by a workforce on £6.50 an hour with no pension costs and other terms and conditions set at the legal minimum.
This development within HMRC clearly represents a threat to every member working in a government call centre.
What you can do:
Visit local Picket Lines to show your support:
HMRC Bradford - No 1 The Interchange CC
HMRC Bradford - Centenary Court
HMRC Leeds - Castle House
HMRC Barnsley - Joseph Locke House
HMRC Sheffield - Concept House (taxes)
HMRC East Yorkshire & Northern Lincolnshire - Cherry Court
Branches should send messages of support to HMRC colleagues locally or via R&Ccampaigns@pcs.org.uk. Ask your MP to sign Early Day Motion (EDM) 2570 to publicly show their support and copy their response to HMRC Group Office.
Together we can win.
The make your vote count (MYVC) campaign is an essential part of our national civil service and NDPB dispute and aims to involve as many PCS members and potential members as possible. The intention is to increase pressure on the employer to settle our dispute and to increase the coverage of issues facing our members.
In 2010 we have the general election as well as numerous local elections.
The MYVC work is not just done around the elections, but should be part of campaigning done by branches throughout the year.
The national pages for the campaign can be found here where a new campaign pack is available.
Stop far right and fascist organisations getting a foothold in local politics. Far right organisations are standing candidates in local elections across the country and hope to take advantage of low voter turnout to get elected.
Far right candidates are racist and fascist, not respectable politicians. They don't believe in public services or trade unions. You are urged to work with 'Unite against Fascism' to make campaigns more effective locally.
If you would like to get involved in campaigning against far right groups in Y&H then please contact the Leeds Office by emailing leeds@pcs.org.uk
The Yorkshire and Humber young members network was launched in October 2005 and has given young members in the region a platform to discuss, plan and campaign around issues specifically affecting them.
The network has gone from strength to strength and members have had the opportunity to get involved in both local and national campaigns; and also going into schools and colleges to speak to students about the benefits of joining a trade union.
There are regular meetings which are open to all young members in the region and are a good opportunity to discuss and campaign around national and regional issues specifically affecting young members.
Still undecided? Just come along and observe or tell us what's going on in your branch and how we can help you. New members always welcome.
If you would like to attend then please contact Matthew Meehan, regional convenor of the young members network.

Other networks in the region include Black Members, Disability and Proud. These all meet regularly and feed into the regional committee. If you would like more details then please contact Juanita Charles. Email: juanita@pcs.org.uk
