Rock solid support for Sheffield jobcentre strike

25 Aug 2017

There has been rock solid support by PCS members for the latest 2-week strike against the closure of Eastern Avenue jobcentre in Sheffield.

Our members at Eastern Avenue jobcentre began the action, the latest round of which ended today (25), on 14 August as part of the PCS campaign to protect services for unemployed, sick and disabled people.

Members want to save the jobcentre and the vital services that it provides to the local community. The jobcentre covers one of the most deprived areas of Sheffield and forcing people from the areas to travel miles into central Sheffield will only make it harder for people trying to find work.

Today is the 21st day in total of strike action taken by the members at Eastern Avenue in defence of their jobcentre. The strike has remained rock solid throughout with just a handful of managers crossing the picket line.

Every day the members have run well-attended and lively picket lines. The strike has received excellent support from the local community. Supporters from community groups, opposition parties and from across PCS have joined members on the picket line, offered messages of support and made generous donations.

The walkout follows week-long strikes in June and July.

Members will be consulted next week about the next steps in the campaign to save Eastern Avenue.
