Applications now open for health, safety and welfare seminar 2020

06 Jan 2020

Over the weekend 28-29 March 2020, PCS will be holding its first ever national health, safety and welfare seminar. Applications to attend this event are now open. We are especially keen to receive applications from newly elected health and safety reps and green/environmental reps.

This event will take place from lunch time on 28 March and finish no later than 1pm on the 29th March and will be an opportunity to meet other health and safety reps from across PCS areas and to discuss:

  • Your rights as a health and safety rep and how to use the law.
  • Organising on health and safety – instilling an effective inspection and reporting culture.
  • Tackling work related stress, depression and anxiety – one of the biggest hazards facing workers in the modern workplace.
  • What will happen to health and safety laws and regulations under the Tories.
  • Working with green reps to tackle environmental issues.
  • Whitehall Studies II – what progress has been made?
  • Improving training – what will assist you in carrying out your role.

We will also discuss plans in relation to International Workers Memorial day 2020 on 28 April.

The campaign theme will be; ‘Tackling psychosocial hazards at work – taking stress out of the job’.

The theme allows us to campaign for action to remedy the broad range of contributory factors and engage those in the union movement not primarily interested in occupational health and safety, including:

  • Low pay, payment by results, piecework
  • Workload, working hours and work patterns
  • Inadequate staffing
  • Job insecurity, downsizing
  • Precarious/informal/gig work
  • Punitive sickness absence policies
  • Punitive disciplinary procedures
  • Oppressive performance management/appraisal systems
  • Lean production, new management techniques/behavioural safety
  • Surveillance at work
  • Lack of control
  • And whatever else is a key issue under this theme in our workplaces, for example all the above as it relates to young workers.

Please bring this to the attention of health and safety reps in your branch or those with an interest in health, safety and welfare and return to healthandsafety@pcs.org.uk by Friday 6 March. A branch briefing has gone out with an application form. You can apply online here.
