Apprentice Survey: impact of coronavirus on UK apprenticeships – ACTION

26 May 2020

PCS is asking all aprentices to complete an online survey on the impact of COVID-19 on their apprenticeship.

***Please note*** This survey has been extended and the closing date for responses is now 26 June 2020. For more information please ask your Branch Secretary for a copy of DWP/BB/045/20.

The online survey is aimed at all apprentices across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. PCS is asking apprentices to complete the survey, to build up the most comprehensive picture of what’s happening locally. Non-members are asked to join the union.

Responses are requested by Friday 29 May (now 26 June 2020 - see above). All the information provided will be treated as strictly confidential.

The survey is designed to gain an accurate picture of the impact of coronavirus (COVID-19) and lockdown restrictions on the 9,500-plus UK apprenticeships, identifying issues for negotiators to resolve. In DWP, most of our 4,000 apprenticeships have been ‘paused’ for at least three months, from 1 April – 30 June, to allow apprentices to work full-time on processing Universal Credit applications and other emergency measures.

At the time of writing, there are no clear plans on when and how these apprenticeships will be resumed, and that is something PCS representatives will be discussing with the employer, to try to ensure no detriment to apprentices.

To encourage participation, PCS Learning is offering £500 of vouchers in a prize draw to eight winners with a first prize of £100. To be entered in the draw, apprentices must either be PCS members – or non-members requesting they be contacted by PCS about the benefits of joining (follow-up contact will be made centrally by PCS organising staff).

Below is a draft that reps can use to ask Apprentices to complete the survey.

PCS Learning is publishing regular advice to apprentices on their rights and how the current government guidance affects them. You can find the latest advice here.

Message to apprentices

Subject heading: Apprentice survey: impact of Covid-19 – please complete

"Dear apprentice,

PCS is running an online survey of apprentices in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, including all 4,000 apprentices in the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). We encourage non-members to complete this survey so the fullest picture can be obtained.

We want to understand the impact of coronavirus (Covid-19) on your apprenticeship, and what’s happening at local level. So if you’re an apprentice, please complete this survey.

All the information you provide will be treated as strictly confidential and anonymised before sharing with PCS representatives and employers. Where problems are identified, your PCS representatives will be raising these as a collective issue with DWP management.

Please complete the survey no later than Friday 29 May (now 26 June 2020 - see above)

To encourage you to complete the survey, PCS is offering a prize draw of £500 in vouchers to eight winners, with a 1st prize of a £100 voucher, two 2nd prizes of £75 vouchers, and five 3rd prizes of £50 vouchers. Further details are included in the survey itself."
