Deptford jobcentre faces closure

05 Jun 2009

On 13 March PCS members at Deptford job centre were advised that it was likely that the office would close, as the lease is to expire in November 2009.

The private landlords have planning permission to convert the building occupied by Deptford Jobcentre into a restaurant and private flats. The company now looks likely to go ahead with the plan.

PCS have launched a campaign to either keep the job centre open or secure alternative accommodation within Deptford.

So far the union campaign has:

  • Launched petitions locally and on the 10 Downing Street website.
  • Enlisted the support of the local MP, Joan Ruddock, who convened a meeting of stakeholders at the job centre on 27 March to see if an acceptable resolution could be found.
  • Secured unanimous cross party support for the campaign from Lewisham Council.
  • Secured support of several local organisations including Lewisham Trades Council

PCS believe it is outrageous to be removing this vital local service from Deptford at a time of rapidly rising unemployment.

Members are encouraged to get everyone they know to sign the petition on the Downing Street website.
