On 13 March PCS members at Deptford job centre were advised that it was likely that the office would close, as the lease is to expire in November 2009.
PCS have launched a campaign to either keep the job centre open or secure alternative accommodation within Deptford.
So far the union campaign has:
- Launched petitions locally and on the 10 Downing Street website.
- Enlisted the support of the local MP, Joan Ruddock, who convened a meeting of stakeholders at the job centre on 27 March to see if an acceptable resolution could be found.
- Secured unanimous cross party support for the campaign from Lewisham Council.
- Secured support of several local organisations including Lewisham Trades Council
PCS believe it is outrageous to be removing this vital local service from Deptford at a time of rapidly rising unemployment.
Members are encouraged to get everyone they know to sign the petition on the Downing Street website.
