Local authority elections and political activity

17 Apr 2018

The term ‘purdah’ is often used to describe the period immediately before an election or referendum when there are restrictions on the official activity of civil servants. It is also called the 'pre-election period'. During this time civil servants should do everything possible to avoid any activity that could call their political impartiality into question and to ensure that public resources are not used for party-political purposes. Guidance is issued on the GOV.UK website for each pre-election period covering the official activity of civil servants. The pre-election period for local elections on 3 May 2018 started on 12 April.
