PCS at Pride

PCS at Pride

PCS recognises the part that Pride has played in advancing LGBT+ equality over the past 50+ years following the partial decriminalisation of male homosexuality in England and Wales in 1967.

In recent years there has been an ever increasing commercialisation of some Pride events, moving away from the political roots of Pride in favour of big businesses.

Our union acknowledges that with ongoing cuts due to the government austerity agenda, many local authorities are unable to help fund local Pride events, forcing organisers to adopt such an approach that may include an element of paid entry for attendees.

PCS believes that all local Pride events should be free and led by local LGBT+ communities rather than by commercial interests and should be on a not for profit basis. Where an entry fee is required, our Union believes these funds should be reinvested in local LGBT+ communities to help support those who need it most.

Proud attends many Pride events across the UK each year and welcomes all PCS members, whether you identify as LGBT+ or as an ally to join us.

If you would be interested in organising a presence at your local Pride event then you can contact proud@pcs.org.uk where a member of Proud’s National Committee will be able to offer support to facilitate this.
