“Sounds interesting – but I must admit, I don’t really know what neurodiversity is.”
Don’t worry, you are not alone. PCS is at the forefront of trying to spread awareness on this subject.
“Are we talking about mental health and learning disabilities?”
No, though they are very important subjects for union members in workplaces too!
“So who are these neurodiversity people then? I don’t know if there’s any in my workplace”
Neurodiversity is ALL OF US! The human race is very Neurodiverse, which is one of the things that make us such a wonderfully interesting species! What we also know is that some people – a lot of people in fact, undoubtedly including colleagues, friend, children, family members – will have an identifiable neuroatypical condition, and this may sometimes require support. Conditions could include Autism, Tourettes, Aspergers, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, ADHD, OCD, etc.
Can we cure these illnesses?
It’s a common mistake, but these aren’t illnesses! We all have a way in which our brains are “wired”. Neuroatypical conditions are just certain patterns of wiring. What people with such conditions DO “suffer” from is misunderstanding and discrimination. This course looks at ways in which we can increase understanding and offer support when it’s needed. But most importantly for us as union members it’s about organising workers to achieve positive change in the workplace.
We don’t need fixing – attitudes do!
