This 10-day course provides full TUC accreditation for trade union health and safety (H&S) reps on completion. It covers the role and function of H&S reps, how to involve members and organise around H&S at work, the legal framework for H&S, the rights of H&S reps and how to take forward H&S issues at work. It includes accident reporting/investigations and risk assessments.
The course takes place over 10 wednesdays (19 September – 21 November). You must register for the course through the TUC website.
The course is delivered on a day release basis over the 10-week period (60 hours). H&S reps have a legal (mandatory) right to reasonable paid time off to attend and it is advisable to give your employer as much notice as possible when applying for release. What constitutes “reasonable notice” is available in the ACAS code of practice for Time Off for Trade Union Duties and Activities.
Reasonable travel and subsistence (T&S) in line with PCS policy can be claimed for attending H&S Stage 1 courses providing an estimate of expenses and PCS application form is submitted to us at least 2 weeks before the course begins, and is subject to approval. T&S will not be paid without prior authorisation. (PCS expenses guidance)
