Our Alternative Vision for Prisons report launched in parliament on 9 May, 2018 uses the experience of our members who work as instructional officers (IOs) in prisons to make recommendations about how prisons can best support offenders to turn their lives around.
Giving prisoners meaningful training and employment can help rehabilitate them and reduce reoffending.
At present training delivery is too target focussed and not tailored enough towards individual’s needs. We recommend returning the provision of training workshops to HMPPS.
One of our other key recommendations made by the report is to review the HMPPS Policy Statement to include as its main aim that “Rehabilitation and the avoidance of recidivism is the focus of the agenda for the prison service.”
