Covid-19 Testing

23 Apr 2020

It has been reported in the media that justice sector workers are to be offered Covid-19 tests, but it is not on such a wide scale as has been reported.

Employer representatives have confirmed to PCS that testing is now available to staff in the MOJ, HMPPS and HMCTS.

We must be clear that currently not everyone will be tested. The proposal is for an antigen test to be carried out, which can distinguish if a person has Covid-19 or not. The only staff who will be tested are those currently self-isolating for suspected coronavirus or because a family member has symptoms. The employer has confirmed that testing will be available for up to 4 family members at the same time. If you are found not to have the virus the expectation is that you will return to work quicker.

PCS has not yet agreed to the employer’s proposals and we are considering carefully the suggested approach. PCS nationally are considering the response and advice to members on testing will be available as soon as possible.

In the interim, employer representatives have confirmed that testing is entirely voluntary, as is disclosure of test results.
