All POA branches in England and Wales are holding branch meetings today regarding staff and prisoner safety in our prisons.
PCS fully supports the POA position in relation to staff and prisoner safety. Indeed the last twelve months has seen alarming increases in the number of assaults on prisoners and staff including on our Instructional Officer members.
PCS and sister TUS unions raised this in person with the Prisons Minister earlier this week.
There are numerous reasons as to why the situation in prisons is as it is, including austerity which has seen a cut in funding of 25% since the financial crisis. Resulting in the loss of many experienced loyal staff. A smaller workforce has put unreasonable pressures on many governors who are struggling to maintain a regime that provides the purposeful activity required to take forward a rehabilitative agenda.
Dave Vickers, PCS HMPPS branch chair stated “that Prisoners and staff have a right to be able to live and work in a safe environment. There are initiatives that are being piloted and seem to be effective which all unions would like to see rolled out nationally sooner rather than later”.
