Become a union learning rep

Places are still available on the upcoming ULRs training course, open to all English regions, starting on 29 June.

What is a ULR?

Union learning reps, like union health and safety reps, have specific protected rights and duties in the UK workplace. They play a vital role in employers in all areas of the economy, in private and public sectors.

In England the government pulled away from funding unions directly in 2021. However, in many unions, including PCS that budget cut has, paradoxically, coincided with a resurgence in interest in the great value Learning Reps can provide to the trade union movement. ULRs aren’t going away.

Learning reps play a huge role in helping members gain the learning and development opportunities they need. Whether it’s promoting relevant external or employer-run courses, advising apprentices about their rights, or helping to arrange support and training in the workplace.

Don’t currently have any ULRs in your branch?

Learning reps are an invaluable member of your branch activist team – they have statutory rights to paid time off to talk to members on a range of workplace issues. ULRs can also play a big role in giving guidance on PCS Digital, which gives members access to a union advice and information.

If you don’t have ULRs in your branch, now is a great time to identify some…or to volunteer yourself.

The only qualifications required are for the union member to be keen, friendly, and interested in promoting life-long learning as well as development and progression in the workplace.

How do I become a ULR?

There is an upcoming PCS Union Learning Reps course (29 June, 6 and 13 July) run by our partners at Newcastle College, and it is open to members throughout England.

This 3-day virtual (Zoom) course will give you all of the tools to make a difference on learning in your union branch.

Online registration via this link: Learning Reps (login to PCS Digital required).

The deadline to apply is 22 June.
