Black History Month: Reclaiming Narratives

We are holding four online events throughout October which look at taking ownership of the stories that define Black culture.

In today’s world, the stories we tell shape our understanding of the past, guide our present, and inform our future. For too long, the history of Black communities has been viewed through perspectives that distort, simplify, or completely ignore the depth of experiences lived by Black people. Black histories have been narrated by others, leading to distorted portrayals that fail to capture the full breadth and depth of Black members’ experiences within their workplaces and lives.

To address these issues, Black History Month UK has chosen the theme Reclaiming Narratives for Black History Month 2024, which runs from 1 to 31 October.

The theme is not just about revisiting history; it is about taking ownership of the stories that define Black culture and heritage, Black members’ contributions, and Black members’ own identities. It is a call to action for Black members across PCS regions and nations to step into the role of union advocates and reps.

Events

This year the national black members’ committee (NBMC) is holding three lunchtime events and one evening live event on the PCS union Facebook page to celebrate Black History Month. These events are open to all Black members and allies.

Please email equality@pcs.org.uk to let us know if you are organising any events in your workplace for Black History Month, or need any help or resources. Please also send us photos or a short video of any activities you have arranged or are taking part in.

*Please note, “Black” is used in the political context to apply to people who are African, African/Caribbean, Asian, Chinese, Arab etc. i.e., people from, African and Asian diaspora, including people of dual heritage.
