British Council staff support call for strike action

Hundreds of British Council employees across the globe said in a consultative ballot they would support strike action over forced redundancies and to oppose outsourcing.

Nearly 80% of those voted said they would support strike action on the following demands.

  • No forced redundancies
  • Fair, open and transparent approach and process for transformation
  • No privatisation/outsourcing of jobs

Turnout was close to 80%, a historic high for British Council members.

These results should send shockwaves through British Council senior leadership, with the clear desire from PCS members for a statutory strike action ballot if our demands are not met.

PCS has shared the results with the employer, requesting a halt to the transformation programme, including suspending attempts to outsource, ‘short-tour’ staff based overseas and refraining from issuing any compulsory redundancy notices.

We meet with representatives from the senior leadership team this week where we will ask for a response to our requests.

Further members' meetings will be arranged in due course to consult our members on next steps.
