DVLA industrial action continues to have huge impact
We understand that there are over two thirds of a million driving licenses awaiting any kind of action at DVLA. For the Drivers’ Medical section we believe the backlog of unactioned work to be over 300,000 with thousands of pieces of post not even scanned in. The internal chaos appears to be reaching new heights with reports that DVLA management have left identity documents and cash from envelopes unsecured, because of moving staff around to open the masses of post, in order to avoid more criticism from ministers.
Added to this, volunteers are now being sought from non-operational staff to move to open the enormous backlog of post. This would result in the volunteers’ own work mounting up. PCS is advising that members do not volunteer.
Support for the action from members remains steadfast and messages of support have been received from other unions and from PCS branches. DWP Edinburgh branch sent a message saying:
"Our members are aware of your long-running battle for workplace safety and feel that you are fighting for us all……Your fight is our fight.
Our members were angered to learn that a deal which could have ended your dispute was prevented from succeeding by government ministers, who are prepared to put profits before safety.
You deserve the support of the whole trade union movement, and we hope you succeed."
