International Day of Persons with Disabilities - Celebrating Disabled Leaders
Today is International Day of Persons with Disabilities, and this year’s theme is “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future.”
The rallying cry of the disability rights movement is “Nothing about us without us.” That slogan places disabled people at the forefront of campaigns for greater rights, protections and awareness of disability matters – whether that be in the workplace or in wider society.
Being a leader isn’t just about holding an important position, it’s about having your voice heard, promoting inclusion and diversity, standing together with other marginalised groups and campaigning for a better life for all.
International Day of Persons with Disabilities comes in the middle of Disability History Month, which this year is focussed on disability, livelihood and employment. Disabled people face a multitude of barriers in the workplace, from discrimination and harassment to simply being paid less than non-disabled workers.
Get involved
In PCS, our Disabled Members’ Forum has been at the forefront of campaigning for individual and collective rights to protect and enhance the experience of disabled workers.
You can get involved by joining your regional or national disabled members' network, wherever you work across the civil service and related areas. The networks meet to discuss and address the challenges and barriers faced by disabled people and to share success stories and best practice. You don't have to be nominated to get involved.
You can also opt in to receive information on disability issues including our regular digest.
