Launch of new Advocate Training trial

We are revising the role of union advocates and are looking at new ways of identifying and training those who volunteer

We have been surveying current advocates and reps about their experiences of advocates in PCS.  The online survey is still open for branches to submit responses.

We now wish to trial some approaches to identify and train advocates which will help us build our activist base to assist in future organising or ballot work.

Advocate sign up form

A new advocate sign-up form is now live on the website. Members who wish to volunteer as an Advocate can complete the form to express their interest and will then be encouraged to contact a branch rep to request training. Branches can also share the link to the form and encourage members to get more involved.

Advocate induction session

A new induction session has been drafted which will be trialled with any new potential Advocates. The new session will require a rep from the branch to arrange a time and date to meet with the potential advocate for 10 to 15 minutes; this can be done in person or on Zoom and could be on a coffee or lunch break or some other suitable time. The meeting would be to chat through why the member wants to get involved and establish with them how they could help out in their workplace. Reps can then formally register the member as an advocate on the Organising App.

PCS staff will contact branches to provide and talk through the new training materials. For Branches who need support, PCS organising staff will be available to co-facilitate the initial sessions, though it is hoped that branches will be able to run the inductions themselves before long.

Download and read the facilitator notes for the new Advocate Induction session and the accompanying handouts.
