MPs back PCS strike action at the British Council over jobs and privatisation
Twelve MPs from Labour, SNP, Plaid Cymru and Liberal Democrats have signed an Early Day Motion calling for the halting of compulsory redundancies and further privatisation, and to allow more time for the business to recover.
PCS also has concerns over restructuring and outsourcing at the organisation, which promotes the English language and British culture overseas.
Members in Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh, London and Manchester are taking strike action for three days from today. They will be joined by members in workplaces across the globe, including in Bogota and Baghdad.
PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said: “This assault on the British Council will have consequences, not just for our members, but for those who use the services the British Council provides. Now is the time we should be strengthening international ties, not cutting them.”
