PCS condemns Cabinet Office jobs cut plan

PCS has said that after a week of unacceptable civil service-bashing from members of the new government, the announcement of up to 400 voluntary redundancies at the Cabinet Office is extremely disappointing.

On Tuesday, chancellor Rachel Reeves said she would take an an iron grip on the public finances and last Friday prime minister Kier Starmer said civil servants “are comfortable in the tepid bath of managed decline.”

The Cabinet Office has announced it will cut 400 jobs as part of reforms to “cut red tape and remove duplication of roles.”

Responding to today’s announcement PCS General Secretary Fran Heathcote said: “To cut jobs in the Cabinet Office before restructuring the Cabinet Office is topsy-turvy management.

“How can the government shed jobs before knowing which jobs are needed in the future? Ministers are putting the cart before the horse.

“After a week of unacceptable civil service-bashing from members of the new government, this announcement is extremely disappointing.

“People voted for change, not for a continuation of damaging plans to cut civil service jobs.

“We expect better from a Labour government and our members deserve better than to be told, just before Christmas, they might be losing their jobs in the new year.”
