PCS responds to defence select committee report on contracted staff

PCS supports recommendations in a report by MPs that MoD should do more to ensure that contracted staff receive comparable employment contracts to staff directly employed by the MoD.

Responding to today's report by the parliamentary defence select committee on the treatment of contracted staff for the MoD's ancillary services, PCS General Secretary, Mark Serwotka said: "We welcome the report's recommendation that the MoD should give more consideration to providing services in-house rather than outsourcing being the default option.

"The same companies are rewarded for failure time and time again because MoD doesn't take into consideration their previous performance when assessing their bids. We agree that this absurdity needs to end.

"We also support the report's recommendation that MoD should do more to ensure that contracted staff receive comparable employment contracts to staff directly employed by the MoD. While companies make huge amounts of profits, the outsourced staff are completely undervalued as they see their pay, terms and conditions worsened.

"However, instead of continuing to syphon off large amounts of public money to profit-making companies, that money should be better spent on in-house projects run by professional civil servants."
