Royal Parks strikers rally to lobby Trustees

The striking parks workers gathered in Hyde Park yesterday (20) to ………

23 strikers, many attending their first protest, were joined by supporters from across PCS and the labour movement, to protest outside the Royal Parks headquarters in Hyde Park on Wednesday, ahead of the Royal Parks trustees’ meeting.

We were then told that the Royal Parks management had changed the location of the Trustees’ meeting at the last minute to avoid our protest. This meant that we could not engage with most of the trustees, but shows that our presence was having an impact.

Georgia Gould, leader of Camden council and a trustee of the Royal Parks, did come to meet us on the picket line, giving us her support and commitment to resolving the dispute. She assured us that her colleague Danny Thorpe, leader of Greenwich council, and another trustee of the parks would raise our issue in the trustees’ meeting.

Former shadow chancellor and long-time supporter of the strike, John McDonnell MP, joined the protest, bringing his support and solidarity, and former leader of the Labour party Jeremy Corbyn sent a video message, which has now been seen by over 6,000 people.  This has resulted in a significant boost to the strike fund and members’ confidence has never been higher to win this dispute.

There will be a rally to mark the last day of the strike on 29 October at 11am in St James’s Park, Marlborough Gate.
