Industrial action works, and inspires others to stand up and say ‘enough is enough’, said the chair of the PCS parliamentary group as he delivered the group’s annual report to conference the day after delegates agreed to ballot over pay and pensions.

PCS has served notice of industrial action at the British Council today (10 March) in a dispute over redundancies, restructuring and outsourcing.

The British Council previously ran the £110m scheme but was stripped of the contract according to the Guardian in favour of the private consultancy company.

Hundreds of British Council employees across the globe said in a consultative ballot they would support strike action over forced redundancies and to oppose outsourcing.

After its income was hit by the pandemic, the British Council has notified us that it intends to begin formal redundancy consultation. This could lead to around 2000 job cuts across the organisation, in addition to cuts overseas.
