Covid response team helps hundreds of PCS members

26 May 2020

More than 1,600 PCS members have been helped and supported by our Covid-19 response team since its launch 7 weeks ago.

To support our members during the Covid-19 emergency we changed the way we work so that we could respond to questions much more quickly to give the answers members need straightaway and where necessary act to keep them safe.

For the duration of this crisis, our centralised response team is the first point of contact for members’ coronavirus-related queries and representation requests. It is currently handling 60-70 cases a day.

A number of issues have come up frequently, including:

  • Being on special leave and being asked to take annual leave
  • Social distancing
  • Clinically vulnerable vs extremely vulnerable person
  • Returning to work
  • Furlough
  • Health and safety
  • Working from home/in the office
  • What is essential work?

Karen Foster, who is heading up the response team, said: “By setting up a central Covid response team we have been able to identify trends and issues that cut across more than one employer. This has allowed us share higher quality advice and information as well as inform the bargaining agenda.”
