Four weeks of strike action starts

23 Oct 2017

Members at Sheffield Eastern Avenue jobcentre began four weeks of strike action today. They have already taken 26 days of strike action in opposition to the closure of the jobcentre and the loss of an essential public service from a deprived local community.

Members’ anger was intensified by DWP’s recent announcement that the jobcentre will close on 17 November. The strike will now run until the day DWP closes the office.

Again the support for the strike has been second to none. Though it was a terrible morning weather-wise there were fourteen strikers on the picket line, who were joined by other supporters. This strength of numbers will have left management in no doubt about the resolve of the strikers as after 26 days of strike action the support continues unwavering.

Management’s latest move is to close the doors of the jobcentre to the public on 3 November. This will not alter the planned action and is another demonstration of a detached and heartless management rushing through the move without consideration for customers or staff. The vast majority of customers will not find out about the closure dates until their next appointment letters hit the doormats.
