This year’s Gala will be held on Saturday 14 July, celebrating trade union history and workers’ rights. Join PCS at the Gala and support our pay ballot and campaign.
The Durham Miners’ Gala, organised by the Durham Miners' Association, is also known as the Big Meeting. It is the annual celebration of trade union collectivism, community spirit and international solidarity.
The main assembly point for PCS members is 9:30am at The New Inn, 29 Church Street Head, Durham, DH1 3DN. PCS reps complete with banners, flags and the PCS balloon meet up to march to the racecourse together. Other assembly points are the Miners’ HQ at Redhills near the railway station and the Market Place.
At the Racecourse, there is a platform for the speakers, and the banners are strapped to the surrounding fences creating a colourful tapestry of working class history.
Speakers this year include Jeremy Corbyn MP, Emily Thornberry MP, Shadow Foreign Secretary, Frances O'Grady, general secretary of the TUC and Matt Wrack, general secretary of the Fire Brigades Union.
There are numerous stalls, exhibitions, a funfair, music and entertainment for all the family.
Highlighting our campaign
As part of our presence at the gala we will be highlighting our ballot for industrial action for a 5% pay rise and calling on all unions to unite to end poverty pay for all workers.
We will have a copy of our pay petition on the PCS stall and other campaign materials.
Big vote day
The Gala coincides with our big vote yes day, when we are making a final push to get the message out about the ballot and the importance of voting. If you’re not going to the Gala, please consider going to your local regional office for a couple of hours and helping out.
