PCS What's On: 11 - 17 January

As 2021 gets well underway, PCS is offering a bumper schedule of events next week. Whether you are a union rep looking to learn how to organise and run an AGM, or how you can mentor new reps, or whether you are a new PCS member looking to find out what unions are all about, then PCS has something to offer you this coming week.

Green Reps and Climate Justice - Northern

12 January 

On this course we learn from sharing experience with colleagues on reducing waste, recycling, energy saving, green procurement, developing environmental management systems, and drawing up workplace agreements. We also look at the wider context of sustainability; renewable energy, climate change, fairtrade and other ethical policies.

Numbers Are Fun! - England

12 January: 12.30-1.30pm

John Ainsworth, former PCS Group Organiser, shares his love of numbers. Learn some fascinating facts, some terrible jokes and some tricks to amaze your friends and family with. They will wonder how you did it and you will be surprised you can do it! You just have to promise not to spoil this session by telling others how to do the tricks when the secrets are revealed... the terrible jokes you can share at will!


Beginning Family History Research - England

12 January: 3.30-4.30pm

This course is aimed at those who haven't previously begun their family history research and would like to know where to begin. The tutor will give you some tips to help you get started.


Personal Finance and Budget Management - England

12 January: 10.30-11.30am

This session will help you find out about some useful tools and information to help you manage your personal finances more effectively. It will introduce some budget planning tools that may help you to better control your individual/family finances. It's an interactive workshop and you will be able to fully engage with the activities involved, which will help you build a solid understanding of home finance budgeting.


Techniques to Learn a New Language - England

12 January

Learning a new language can be exciting but also feel intimidating. Which ones are easier, and what if the one you're interested in has a completely different alphabet? What is the best way to get started? Matt Pointon, a project worker from Unionlearn, speaks several languages and has taught English for Speakers of Other Languages overseas. Here he gives you the benefit of his experience to demonstrate ways of enjoying this journey and unlocking any new language in this engaging and interactive session.


Preparing for your AGM - Northern Ireland

12 - 13 January: 10am-12.30pm

This is a one day course aimed at any new branch officers or reps involved with preparing for your branch AGM.  The course is designed to explain the AGM process including deadlines, help increase AGM attendance and participation, and to develop motion writing skills.

This course is aimed at members who are new to the union and interested in getting involved in union activity. This introductory one-day course will give a flavour of what trade unions do, the role of trade unions in society and what it means to be an active member of PCS. The course is open to any member of PCS.

Cancer in the Workplace (Prostate Cancer) - North West

13 January: 12.15-1.45pm

Being diagnosed with cancer and going through treatment can be very challenging. When this happens to a colleague at work it can be difficult to know what to do, both for them and for you. Elaine Dobson, Unionlearn Projects Officer provides case examples and talks positively about how to support people dealing with this issue. Hugh Davis, HMRC London and South East Regional Health and Safety Vice Chair also shares with us the experience of his journey of being diagnosed with prostate cancer to how he is today.


Handling Complex Issues - Northern Ireland

13 - 27 January 

This is a three-day course aimed at more experienced reps. It focuses on conduct and discipline, bullying/harassment, discrimination, attendance and ‘efficiency’ issues – and explores ways of collectivising issues (bargaining for better agreements and policies, and the organising and campaigning work needed to support that). You will also look at the deadlines and procedures required to protect any members’ legal position.

This is a follow on course from Level 2, accredited by AGORED Cymru and offers an ongoing development of counselling skills, delivered by Adult Learning Wales
