As the first week of the month-long PCS DVSA IT strike comes to an end we publish some of the messages of support the strikers have had from fellow trade unionists and urge more supporters to get in touch.
Members are angry about attacks on their terms and conditions including flexible working and a lack of consultation from management.
The strike will affect maintenance of IT systems, which are used to book and allocate tests, incident management and training of new staff.
The walkout represents the beginning of a rolling programme of action by staff across the DVSA, which could cause massive disruption to the service.
The staff taking action are based in Swansea and Nottingham.
Unison and Unite reps have sent through their messages of support.
Jean Thorpe, chair of Nottingham City Unison branch, said: “Our solidarity and best wishes for the 4 week strike action being taken by the DVSA staff in Nottingham and elsewhere. We wish you all the best in your action.”
Night shift worker Kev, a Unite adult learner rep at Toyota, visited the Nottingham picket line on his way from his shift. He said: “Just wanted to offer solidarity and say I should be back tomorrow to stand with them.”
Jon Dale, secretary of Unite EM/NG32 Nottinghamshire Health Branch, said: “Please give greetings to your members on strike from our branch. A victory of civil servants against an employer determined to cut workers' living standards, impose poor working conditions and increase workloads will inspire all workers.
“NHS workers ultimately work for the same employer – the Tory government which is hell-bent on attacking all public services and aiming for further widespread privatisation. Solidarity and best wishes for a quick success.”
