Slow hand clap the government over derisory key worker pay

10 Mar 2021

We are urging PCS members to get on their doorsteps at 8pm on 11 March and slow hand clap the government over the insulting way it has treated public sector workers over pay.

At the budget last week chancellor Rishi Sunak confirmed a pay freeze for the civil service and followed this by going back on a previous promise to reward NHS staff by making them a 1% pay offer.

PCS is supporting the TUC’s Winning a Pay Rise for Key Workers campaign which aims to win pay rises for all key workers and urging our members and supporters to slow hand clap tomorrow.

This week we wrote to Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove setting out our claim. In addition to progress on coherence of pay scales, we are seeking a cost of living rise of 10%. This would recognise our members’ vital contribution during the pandemic and provide a degree of restitution for the adverse effect on their living standards of years of pay restraint.
