Menopause in the workplace - London and South East

22 February

This course for reps has been designed to create greater awareness of the menopause as a workplace issue. It looks at the symptoms women can experience, and helps reps consider various workplace factors that may negatively impact on workers experiencing the menopause, including practices that may put the health and safety of menopausal women at risk and/or may be considered discrimination against workers experiencing the menopause.


Mental health awareness - Northern Ireland

22 - 23 February

Stress, depression or anxiety are now the greatest cause of work absence in the UK.  In January 2018 a ministerial response revealed in parliament that 26% of all sickness absence in the civil service was due to mental health conditions.  Our training can give you the knowledge and confidence to help members, to challenge where policies may be being breached or employers are unaware of employment rights, and to campaign for good mental health in the workplace.

Microsoft Powerpoint morphing - England

22 February: 1-2pm

This is an informal session for PCS members who want to use Powerpoint more effectively.  This training will be run by Mark Rowe, Project worker from union learn, and will cover changing the appearance of objects. Mark will also be happy to demonstrate things you request to see on the day if sufficient time allows.


Civil Service Pensions course - North West

22 February 

This course aims to help you; understand different types of pension schemes, understand state and occupational pension schemes, understand your own pension scheme, understand how to improve your pension, and answer your pension questions.


Neurodiversity in the workplace (Stage 1) - All PCS regions

23 - 24 February: 9.30am-4pm

Are you interested in raising awareness of neurodiversity? All of us have colleagues, friends, children, family members that will have an identifiable neuroatypical condition – and our workplaces and wider society can cause difficulties for them. PCS is committed to fighting for all members, especially those who face disadvantage and discrimination. Opportunities need to be widened, and support strengthened, not cut back under the excuse of ‘austerity’. Sign up to our 2-day course and become a PCS neurodiversity champion.


Workplace representatives - South West

23 February - 30 March

This course is aimed at newly-appointed reps and union Advocates. It will give you the skills and knowledge to effectively represent your members, covering organising, campaigning, negotiating, equality, and more.  The course covers essential approaches and techniques that underpin effective organising and bargaining set in the context of the contemporary trade union movement. This includes the role of the union rep in building the strength of the union, communications, effective negotiations and planning.


Workplace reps - Midlands

23 February - 30 March

This course is aimed at newly-appointed reps and union advocates. These six days training will give you the skills and knowledge to effectively represent your members, covering organising, campaigning, negotiating, equality, and more.  The course covers essential approaches and techniques that underpin effective organising and bargaining set in the context of the contemporary trade union movement. This includes the role of the union rep in building the strength of the union, communications, effective negotiations and planning.


Creative writing competition support - Northern

24 February 

Suitable for anyone but particularly helpful if you are entering our creative writing competition. Produce your own short story. Forget the busyness of the day and lose yourself in this fun exercise producing your own short story with Matt Pointon, Unionlearn project officer at 4:30pm. Matt has an MA in creative writing and specialises in short stories. Matt will also be able to give you helpful suggestions for developing a short story for the competition.

 


Health and safety reps (Part 2) - North West

25 February - 11 March

Building on stage one, this course explores in more detail the relevant skills and knowledge you will require to be an effective health and safety rep. Does your employer carry our proper risk assessments? Do they provide appropriate staff training? Do they adhere to adequate policies and procedures? Learn the trade unionist approach to tackling health and safety; we tackle the issues that affect our members; and we campaign on those issues to build greater levels of union organisation, with a view to negotiating better workplace conditions with employers.

This course will help you to; develop your understanding of mental health issues, identify how people with mental health conditions experience discrimination in the workplace, represent and support members with mental health conditions, and discuss the role of trade unions in dealing with mental health issues.


Organising - Midlands

25 February - 11 March

This course is aimed at reps and union advocates. The course covers essential approaches and techniques that underpin effective organising in the workplace/branch.


HMRC ULR network meeting - North West

25 February: 10am-12pm

This session runs from 10am to noon on Microsoft Teams. Union learning reps are invited to suggest agenda items for this event through the chair: shaun.sullivan@hmrc.gov.uk


Welcome to PCS - Northern Ireland

25 - 26 February

This course is aimed at members who are new to the union and interested in getting involved in union activity. This introductory one-day course will give a flavour of what trade unions do, the role of trade unions in society and what it means to be an active member of PCS. The course is open to any member of PCS.
