Women’s History Month in the UK is celebrated during the month of March. This year PCS has chosen the theme of A Better Future for Women.
Women's History Month aims to increase knowledge of women's history: to take one month of the year to remember the contributions of notable and ordinary women, to show that it should be impossible to teach or learn history without remembering these contributions.
51 years on from the Equal Pay Act, women are still not achieving parity with male colleagues, and the impact of Coronavirus has highlighted the inequality that exists, and has actually widened in many cases.
We want a Better Future for Women; a future where women can reach pay parity, can be free of sexual harassment and discrimination, and the horrifying increased incidences of domestic abuse are not part of a woman’s world.
On International Women’s Day on 8 March, we ask all colleagues to think about the women you work with. While many of us are still working from home, consider an online event to raise awareness and show support and solidarity with women.
We have provided a series of social media graphics, marking 10 key moments in history and looking at women who have been inspired and are now inspiring others; they will be published one each day starting on 1 March. Sign up to follow PCS on Twitter and Instagram and share these moments with friends and colleagues using the hashtag #PCSABetterFutureForWomen.
All women members can register for this year’s TUC Women’s Conference on 3-5 March. The conference is online for the first time and open to all women members; you do not have to attend for the full three days. It is an opportunity to hear speakers on a variety of topics, sign up for various sessions and, hopefully, feel able to take that step to becoming more involved in union activity and supporting and uplifting other women.
The PCS national women’s forum has also arranged a fringe event on 3 March from 6.30 – 7.30 pm on Black Women and the Impacts of Coronavirus. Register via Eventbrite
To round off Women’s History Month, there will be a PCS event on Zoom on 30 March, from 6.30 – 7.45 pm, entitled Celebrating Women, Past, Present and Future. More details to follow. Both events will be chaired by Zita Holbourne, PCS national vice president.
Whatever date you choose to celebrate the achievements of women, please show solidarity with women, not just for March, but for A Better Future for Women. #PCSABetterFutureForWomen
