DVLA strike action: the road ahead

Following a series of weeks of successful targeted strikes PCS has served notice of a further 4 weeks of targeted industrial action at the DVLA with members in the drivers medical group set to walk out from 2 to 31 August.

We are asking all PCS members in drivers medical, the department which decides whether drivers who have medical conditions are fit to drive safely, to take strike action over Covid safety. Drivers medical was chosen due to its strategic importance to the agency and the fact that ministers are assigning huge importance to the backlogs in this area.

Our action to date has had a huge impact on the backlogs at the DVLA and, in serving this strike notice, we are forcing the DVLA to consider whether they can sustain a month of targeted action in drivers medical. This dispute could have been easily resolved 6 weeks ago when a deal was withdrawn at the last minute (https://www.pcs.org.uk/news-events/news/ministers-scupper-dvla-deal-prompting-sustained-strike-action-months-come-pcs) and it’s time for transport secretary Grant Shapps and the agency to get back around the table and negotiate.

Strike pay will be paid at £40 a day. If you feel that this leaves you in a difficult financial situation, even with strike pay, email the branch pcs@dvla.gov.uk (mailto:pcs@dvla.org.uk) and speak to your local PCS reps about our hardship fund.

Transport select committee

The parliamentary transport select committee meets tomorrow morning (21) to consider the backlogs at the DVLA. Mark Serwotka, PCS General Secretary, and Sarah Evans, DVLA branch chair, will be appearing at the committee and ensuring the situation on the ground at the DVLA is reflected.

The DVLA and DfT will be putting forward Julie Lennard, DVLA chief executive, and Baroness Vere, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Transport, respectively.
