Temporary Change to Fitness for Work Note Requirements

The government has temporarily changed the Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) Regulations to allow GPs more time to manage the vaccine booster programme.

The change comes in from 17 December 2021. It means that all employees, whether you work in the public or private sector or are employed on a permanent or temporary contract, can self-certificate for up to 28 days for absences starting on or after 10 December 2021, up to and including 26 January 2022.

This applies to any illness and replaces the normal requirement to provide a GP’s fit note from the 8th day of sick absence. Employers cannot ask for medical evidence, such as a fit note, until after 28 days of absence.

You are still required to inform your employer if you are not well enough to attend work using the usual procedures.

This is a time-limited change and will end on 26 January 2022 when the self-certification period will revert to 7 days for any sickness absence beginning on or after the 27 January 2022.

Please seek advice from your local PCS representative if your employer asks you to provide a fit note for absences from 10 December 2021 to 26 January 2022.
