PCS General Secretary election 2019

Election result

Members of PCS have overwhelmingly elected Mark Serwotka for a fifth term as general secretary of Britain's largest civil service union.

First elected in 2000, Mark Serwotka was returned for another five year term with 53.3% of the vote. With PCS members facing serious challenges over pay, pensions and privatisation in the New Year, the re-election of Mark Serwotka is an endorsement of the union’s active campaigning and organising strategies.

National President Fran Heathcote said: "I would like to extend my congratulations to Mark and say how pleased I am at the result. Since becoming general secretary, Mark has played a leading role in ensuring that our union focuses on members’ issues and workplace union organisation. During this time, we have seen PCS become much more effective and listened to by ministers, employers, the media and TUC. I look forward to working with Mark in the period ahead”.

Mark Serwotka said: “It’s an honour and a privilege to be elected as PCS general secretary for the fifth time. I wish to thank all PCS members and reps for their support of our union, and in particular those that campaigned and voted for me.

“In my election campaign I said we would need a strong union whatever the result of the general election. To achieve that I hope that members will participate in all our future campaigns and that many of you will become active in your union.

“I will now work with the national executive committee to build the effective organisation that we need; more members involved in the union’s decision making, more members getting active, more workplace reps, and a vibrant union culture in more of our workplaces. That is the way together we can win fair pay for all and defend our pensions.”
