Held every year, the Proud AGM is members opportunity to elect our new national committee who become responsible for taking forward the agenda of LGBT+ members, in line with the motions agreed during the course of the meeting.
For 2018, Proud’s AGM took place at the PCS’ Leeds regional office in November with members from across the UK in attendance, as well as members of PCS Equalities Department who supported the running of the meeting and PCS Vice President Jackie Green, Proud’s liaison to our national executive committee.
Jackie addressed the meeting, reflecting on the outcome of the previous pay ballot and the next steps being considered by our union’s leadership to continue to the campaign for a pay rise for PCS members.
Jackie then discussed her experience of LGBT+ in the union and her own workplace, sharing the story of a trans person who took their life and the need to continue pursuing our union’s policy on improving trans rights and the gender recognition process in the UK.
Motions submitted for discussion during the meeting covered a range of issues, as well as a number of updates to the rules of Proud, ensuing as a group that we are truly inclusive through the adoption of LGBT+ in regards to our membership and organising.
Trans equality was one of the key discussions during the meeting, following the recent conclusion of the government consultation on reforming the Gender Recognition Act. Our outgoing national committee offering assurances to members that our union’s submission would be made available shortly to ensure transparency with Proud members on this important issue.
Incoming chair, Kris Hendry, closed the meeting with a call to arms of Proud members and the new national committee to ensure that Proud continues to organise and campaign on behalf of all PCS LGBT+ members and carry forward the achievements of those who came before as we enter 2019 and the 50th anniversary of Stonewall Riots.
