PCS, the Forestry Commission and Quarries
PCS is the largest trade union in the Forestry Commission.
Our Forestry Commission Group (FCG) represents members who work in England, Scotland and Wales and is part of the Forestry Commission Trade Unions (FCTU) consisting of PCS, Prospect, Unite and GMB.
PCS/FCTU is also represented on the health and safety executive's quarries national joint advisory committee (QNJAC) by Bruce Hamilton, FCG. It exists to promote health and safety in all sectors of the quarrying and associated industries and raise health and safety concerns. Our representative ensures compliance and improvements are being made.
Early in 2012, the health and safety executive reported that the forest industry is one of the most dangerous sectors in which to work in the UK.
In the five years up to March 2012, there was an average of 10.4 fatalities per 100,000 workers. This is more than three times the fatality rate for the construction industry.
PCS believes that health and safety is an important part of the working lives of all forestry commission employees and is taken equally seriously by both the trade unions and the management.
PCS/FCTU is also represented on the Forest Industries Safety Accord steering group by Bruce Hamilton, set up in March 2012.
Rising to the challenge - become a rep
PCS are urging union members in the Forestry Commission to rise to the challenge of making this organisation, and where possible the wider forestry industry, the safest place to work, by becoming health and safety representatives.
PCS health and safety representatives make a difference because trade union involvement:
- Helps reduce injuries at work by at least 24 per cent
- Leads to reductions the levels of ill-health caused by work
- Encourages greater reporting of injuries and near-misses
- Makes workers more confident
- Helps develop a more positive safety culture in the organisation.
Think that you can make a difference? For further information on health and safety issues and becoming a rep, contact Bruce Hamilton or see the FCTU health and safety pages for updates.
