LGBT+ History Month 2020 - Resources for Advocates
LGBT+ History month is held in February every year and PCS’s LGBT+ network, Proud, uses this event as way to organise around and promote equality issues in the workplace.
This year, there is particular emphasis on marking the 20th anniversary of the repeal of section 28, the legislation that previously prevented homosexuality being discussed in schools, and a milestone in LGBT equality campaigning.
As an Advocate, you can help raise the profile and awareness around this issue, as well as LGBT+ equality more generally. Again, you can do as little or as much as you can manage, and we have another three levels of activity which you can help out with:
Level 1 – Update your union noticeboard with LGBT+ History Month and PCS Proud posters. Downoad the poster HERE.
Level 2 – Leaflet or desk-drop your workplace with leaflets on the history of section 28 and the role of campaigners in winning change. Download the leaflets HERE.
Level 3 – Organise a meeting in your workplace on the importance of section 28 and the on-going campaigning work of LGBT activists in PCS. Email email@example.com for support in organising a meeting and arranging guest speakers.
In PCS you’re never alone. It’s likely that you will be part of an established branch, but even if you are the only Advocate or PCS member in your workplace, there are resources and staff who are there to support you in building a union culture in your workplace.
