Specific reps courses

Handling complex issues course

This course is aimed at more experienced reps. It focuses on conduct and discipline, bullying/harassment, discrimination, attendance and ‘efficiency’ issues – and explores ways of collectivising issues (bargaining for better agreements and policies, and the organising and campaigning work needed to support that).

You will also look at the deadlines and procedures required to protect any members’ legal position.

Duration: 3 days

Course requirements: participants should have completed the core PCS workplace reps training programme (or its pre-2019 predecessors).

Learning reps

Union learning reps (ULRs) play a huge role in helping members gain the learning and development opportunities they need. Whether it’s promoting relevant external or employer-run courses, advising apprentices about their rights, or helping to arrange support and training in the workplace, this 3-day course will give you the tools to make a difference on learning in your union branch.

Duration: 3 days

Course requirements: participants should have completed the one day Welcome to PCS or equivalent introductory course.

Branch treasurers

Every strong union branch needs an efficient treasurer. If you’ve just been elected as branch treasurer at your AGM you’ll quickly need a sound knowledge of PCS financial rules, and the tools to keep your branch’s books in order – sign up for this 1-day course at the earliest opportunity.

Duration: 1 day

Course requirements: participants should have completed the one day Welcome to PCS or equivalent introductory course.

Equalities officer

Equalities must be at the heart of everything the union does. Whether you are your branch’s lead ‘equality officer’, a rep for one of the equality ‘strands’ or networks, or simply interested in progressing the union equality agenda in your workplace, this is the course for you. Tackling discrimination, campaigning against fascism, reasonable adjustments and disability rights, and tackling under-representation in PCS are some of the topics covered.

Duration: 3 days

Pre-requisite: participants should have completed the one day Welcome to PCS or equivalent introductory course.

Health and safety reps

Everyone has the right to a safe workplace. Every employer has a duty not to make us ill as a result of going to work. Trade unions have worked hard to deliver the comprehensive health and safety legislation that the UK workforce enjoys. However governments and employers try to undermine the gains we’ve made.

This course will help you mount campaigns to ensure PCS members have protection from stress-inducing, presentee-ism fixated employers…through a strong, well-organised union.

Duration: 3 days, with additional online content – this course involves 3 classroom days ‘blended’ with some activities to be carried out at home or in the workplace utilising the TUC online Health and Safety Reps course

Course requirements: participants should have completed the one day Welcome to PCS or equivalent introductory course.

More information on the online content is on the unionlearn website

Your tutor will guide you during the classroom element to which modules will require completion online.

Please note that, due to different funding models in the devolved nations, PCS will continue to work with TUC Wales, TUC Scotland and TUC Northern Ireland to deliver some specific reps courses (e.g. union learning reps and health and safety reps) in different formats to that laid out here.
