Vote in our ballot to fight the cuts

The government is planning to cut 70,000 civil service jobs to fund an increase in defence spending.

Prime minister Rishi Sunak has said he will spend 2.5% of national income on defence by 2030. However he intends to fund £3 billion of this spending by making cuts of 70,000 jobs to the civil service.

Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg was quoted in the Express as saying: “That seems excellent policy making, redistributing wasted expenditure to the security of the nation.”

It is vital that PCS members show their willingness to fight the cuts by voting in our national ballot. Job security is one of our key campaign aims and it is crucial that we send a clear message to the government on this issue.

Responding to the job cuts announcement, PCS general secretary Fran Heathcote said: “Yet again ministers shamefully see fit to scapegoat their own workforce.

“It’s not right for our members to pay for a rise in defence spending with their jobs, so we’ll fight these proposals …We shall fight these proposals tooth and nail, just as we fought them under Boris Johnson.

“Our members work hard every day providing essential services to keep this country running and should be rewarded with a fair pay rise, not their jobs sacrificed as a pre-election gimmick.”
